What a Croc!

This is how my post would have ended if I hadn’t seen Debbie’s One Word Sunday. As I did see it I had to show the shelf in my living room:

These thin books have been known by German students for the last 150 + years. They are small, thin, cheap and are the usual book versions read in school. All the German classics have been published in this paperback series as well as many, many other titles, also translations of Shakespeare’s plays and other non-German language works. The smaller the number, the more important the work is considered to be in German literature – this certainly holds true in the lower numbers. #1 and #2 is Goethe’s Faust I+II, Faust I is the grey one on the left, glued to hold it together.

  1. Funnily enough, I nearly included a photo of crocs too!!

And it’s good to learn about these yellow books. I hadn’t come across them before but they kept appearing on my last trip to Berlin, plus a variety of wallets/folders, made to look like Reclam books. I obviously hadn’t gone to the right shelves in bookshops before!
