Places of Remembrance

This is the war grave memorial in Modautal. There are other cemeteries in Europe with graves from soldiers and civilians of many nations of the two world wars in the 20th century to remember these victims. They should be memorials not so much of “lest we forget” but rather of “never again”. Sadly, it hasn’t worked.

    1. Can I tell you about this particular cemetery (which is similar to others of the kind all over Germany)? It was created in 1960s in order to lay to rest in one place soldiers, Germans and from other nations, displaced persons, forced labourers particularly from Poland, former Yugoslavia, the former Sowjet Union, former concentration camp prisoners and victims of bombings in the area who were buried in 57 different communities in the area. The organisation who cares about the graves is affiliated to organisations in different countries so that dead are honoured and their remains cared for if they cannot be returned to their native country.
