

about this negative. Sometimes the negative image of photo brings out details a lot more three dimensional than the original. I found this old withered crest made of sandstone on the side of the Speyer Cathedral. Lilies and shells – I don’t know what family the crest belongs to, nor the meaning of it except in the generic sense. The shells are probably a reference to the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James or Jakobsweg. Similar the three lilies might reference France.

The original makes it appear as if the below the surface, whereas the negative makes it appear, to me, anyway, as if the crest is raised on top of the surface. Interesting.

That’s why I like to use negative imagining on frescos and the like, it usually gives a different kind of perspective.
