This is the front of the Herschelbad in Mannheim. Bernhard Herschel was a businessman and local councellor who donated 500,000 goldmarks in early the 20th century for the establishment of a public swimming bath that would carry his name. It took quite a while with planning and building and the baths were finally opened in 1920, 15 years after his death. There are three large pools, bath tubs, a Roman-Irish bath, a sun bathing section and even a pool for dogs.

A few of the various windows seen on the neo-baroque front.

A Roman-Irish bath? That’s a new one on me.

Thank you. Very interesting. Some of it reminds me of the beer spa we went to a few years back, that was in Chodovar in the Czechia. You’re bathed and then wrapped tightly in a blanket with beer hops – but they give you cold beer to drink rather than water.

It was amazing! My husband and I enjoy a glas of beer but only one at the time. We were soaking in the beer suds and the attendants brought a large glass of pilsner. After we downed it we wanted to ask for a glas of water but as soon as we raised our hand we got a new beer. “No, no …”, we said, ” we want …” Ahhh! They understood. They brought brown ale! 😂

Quite amazing what half a million goldmark could buy a century ago. I doubt that ten million euros or dollars could pay for such a structure today.

I used the wikipedia site and a bit of maths and calculated that in terms of salaries the 500,000 Goldmark could compare to 15 to 20 million euros (not very accurate I suspect but it’s sound reasonable).
