Whose Skull Is It Anyway?

“At least I’m still in love with Yorick’s skull. At least I always have time enough to stay in love with Yorick’s skull. I want an honorable goddam skull when I’m dead, buddy. I hanker after an honorable goddam skull like Yorick’s.”

  1. Hamlet – I read it in high school, probably saw the play in England in 1992. For some reason, Yorick didn’t make a very big impression on me, I guess. I must be the only one on whom who didn’t. Maybe I was chatting with someone in the audience instead of paying attention. It certainly raised a stir wherever it came out. So maybe it’s Tchaikowski’s skull or maybe it’s a fake. Great post, Elke!

    1. I’m not sure what I remember of Yorick from my first reading of Hamlet (voluntary, not school). But reading – or rather listening to – the novel by A. J. Hartley and David Hewson: Hamelt, Prince of Denmark: A Novel gave me a whole new interest in Yorick. No spoilers, though. (I picked it mostly because Richard Armitage is reading it, his voice is pure “voice candy”.)
