From age 13 to age 18 I was packed off during summer to family friends living in our twinned town in Provence. Cavaillon is known as the capital of melons, and everywhere in Provence are fields of lavender. For me, these two scents – ripe melons and lavender blooms – conjure up innummerable memories.

I always find the recollection of a nose remarkable. Certain scents from detergents or shampoos and the like and I immediately remember the boyfriend associated with it – and that’s sometimes 50 years ago!
