My children were brought up bilingual. They learned maths in an English speaking school. If you understand German you will know that we say the numbers between 21 and 99 in a weird way: one-and-twenty, nine-and-ninety, etc. So that was confusing to them when they were little. One day, my youngest asked me: “How old are you?” And I answered: “Neununddreißig, nine-and-thirty.” The little one’s eyes nearly popped: “93?!! You are THAT old?!” “No, no, I am 39!” — He thought a bit, looked at me critically and then said: “Oh. So you’re still pretty old.”
Made me feel great at the time.

That’s what they’re there for, our children. To stop us ever feeling as if we’re in any way wonderful human beings.

Kids put everything in perspective. Ninety-three? Thirty-nine? No matter. Still old. Gotta love it.
