A member of the clematis family, accredited to many geographical areas, the common names are old man’s beard, traveller’s joy, withywind, swamp leather-flower, devil’s darning needles, virgin’s bower, and possibly a few more. Which one do you fancy?

I’m quite taken by withywind, but generally use old man’s beard. Does German have a lot of different names too?

I’ve never heard any of them but duckduckgo is my friend and came up with “Waldstrick” (wood rope, which relates to the official name, Waldrebe), “Herrgottsbart” (god’s beard), “Petersbart” (Peter’s beard), “Frauenhaar” (women’s hair, “Teufels- oder Hexenzwirn” (devil’s twine and witches’ twine).

Withywind is rather interesting!

It reminds me of the river that flows through Tom Bombadil’s land, the Withywindle (Lord of the Rings, of course). It took me a bit to realise why it sounded familiar.
