I’m a Fan of Rose-ringed Parakeets

Parakeets are non-native to Europe but at least along the Rhine it can happen that you hear loud screeching and then you look up and see green birds sitting in a high tree. It’s estimated that more than 10,000 rose-ringed parakeets are living in Germany. They started to appear in the middle of last century and established colonies along the River Rhine, mainly in bigger cities like Cologne and Wiesbaden.

These invasive birds are competing with small bats for habitat and with other fruit eating birds for food.

I like them, they certainly add colour our aerial fauna but I’m in two minds whether I’m really a fan.

  1. Parrots have a tendency to be bullies. One of the biggest bullies here, Rainbow Lorikeets have SPS (Small Parrot Syndrome) No matter how big or tougher looking the other bird is, they will have a go, mainly over food

  2. It’s a shame that they are an invasive species; as you say, they bring a real splash of colour to the scene! The two on the feeder certainly look a bit paranoid & as if they’re spoiling for a fight 😂
