but what about Peter Schöffer?
He was born in Gernsheim, a town on the Rhine about 50km south of Mainz where Johannes Gutenberg, studied in Paris at the Sorbonne, worked as a scribe and calligrapher, and when he returned to Germany he started out as an assistant to Gutenberg. Gutenberg wasn’t very talented in economic matters and when he went bankrupt Schöffer took over his workshop with the help of his father-in-law and made book printing into a viable even profitable profession. He is considered one of the best printers and publishers in Europe, combining artistic endeavours with financial success.

I did not know that.

I didn’t either until I came across the statue in his hometown. Schoeffer is known in Germany for a completely different legacy: a bought a house in Mainz where beer was brewed. It’s brewed there still today and the brewery is one of the best known wheat beer brewers in Germany.

Oh, he was important, no doubt. But he wasn’t a good business man, unfortunately.

At least he wasn’t left penniless and out on the street by someone unscrupulous
