There are 19 Neustadt in Germany. That’s proper towns and not counting townships or quarters in established towns. They usually were more newly built towns and named simply to distinguish them from an older town close by – almost as if the people thought that renewal was best accomplished through starting afresh.
Personally, I’ve been in five: Neustadt an der Dosse, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Neustadt an der Aisch, Neustadt am Main, and Neustadt/Westerwald.

We never celebrate our 20th century new towns by including newtown in their name, we do however use the word newtown for places that were created in the 18th and 19th centuries! In fact I am hoping to buy a house on a road called Newtown, and its oldest house is 17th century which is when it was first called Newtown!

New is a relative term! Our old town used to be the new town way back. The old old town still exists, though.
