An Idea Turned to Stone

A really monumental monument – the Niederwald monument – erected to commemorate the unification of the many German states into one Reich. Huge and full of symbols and allegories, overlooking the Rhine and waving her towards a distant France, stands Germania.

The location is wonderful, the message … in my mind it was the turning point when “Deutschland über alles” turned from “allegiance to a common German state superseding local small state fealty” to “Germans are better than others”. Similarity to other states more than 100 years later might be coincidental.
