This is the Diffené bridge in Mannheim. It is a counterpoint or flap bridge over an arm of the river Rhine leading to the harbour. I had to look up what the structures were and now that I know I will go there one day to see the bridge being flapped. I have, however, no idea how often that happens. Maybe I’ll bring food and drink supplies.
Philipp Diffené was the son of a Mannheim mayor and himself a businessman and politician, serving in the German Reichstag in the late 19th century.

Interesting trio this week. I love bridges and taught a unit to my grade 5 students on moveable bridges but I’ve never seen one with three hydraulic levers.

I’ll try to catch them in action. If it ever stops raining …
