Where Everybody Knows Your Game

Not that long ago every tavern in every village in Germany had a regulars’ table called Stammtisch. The local regulars would congregate there, usually just having drinks and only occasionally something to drink. To pass the time they would play cards, usually the traditional games Skat, Doppel- or Schafskopf.

These kind of inns are slowly disappearing. People now buy their drinks at the local bottle store and drink at home, they game at home electronically and talk to friends and others on the internet, they even spew their populist opinions rather via social media than in the local pub. Funnily enough, we still call these opinions and slogans Stammtischparolen.
