Since it’s football time in Europe at the moment (that’s soccer to you Americans and South Africans), particularly in Germany since the country is hosting the UEFA Euro, I thought to take you to the cemetery in the next village, literally a kilometre from our house. It’s the final resting place of Sepp Herberger, arguably the best known German national coach.
There is usually a football lying on this grave. This is a photo from a few years ago, I haven’t had a look if they decorated his grave specially for the Euro.
The German word for cemetery is “Friedhof” (literally “peace yard” or “peaceful yard”) and the town changed the name of the street leading to the cemetery is called after its most famous occupant. Incidentally, the lived on this street for the last 25 years of his life.
