We live in a new apartment building with seven units. Our neighbour next door is an old farm, with the barn, the yard, and the house. When we moved in ten years ago, the farm was already not a working farm anymore. The old farmer lived in the front building, two ponies were stabled in the barn for the grandchildren living in a house on the other side of the gardens.
Here is what it looked ten years ago in summer and a couple of years later in winter.

And here, also in summer a few years back and last year with all the bushes grown. The old barn looks the same.

These is what we look at, give or take a few shrubs.

The old man has since died and the house and barn stand empty. We suspect that it is where Henry, our cat, gets most of mice – a steady supply. We dread the day when the heirs get their act together and sell the old buildings to a property developer. Our view will change and I guess we’ll have at least a year of building noise next to our bedroom.

How unusual to have a modern apartment building next to an old barn. Perhaps it will eventually just be prettified up as a barn conversion?

It’s a “mixed” neighbourhood with farmhouses, residential buildings, workshops, and shops mixed as used to be the norm in villages. But change has crept in. Hardly any shops, few workshops, farmhouses but not working ones. And all is prime location today, since it is close to public transport and also close to woods, vineyards and fields. One after one site is changing into residential buildings.

Oh. So the woods, vineyards and fields are on borrowed time 😦

Not really, not in the foreseeable future. The woods are too extensive and too hilly. The vineyards and fields, maybe some yes, in the future but unlikely in my time.
