Noise Muffling

Living in what is called a “Metrolpol-region” it is not easy to find complete silence. On the one hand there are rural parts but there is also the urban sprawl housing two and a half million people. I remember how silent everything became during the COVID lockdown, the constant backdrop noise was quietened – no permanent car traffic, no airplanes, no people.

Snow seems to have a similar effect. Waking up to a pristine white blanket spread over everything appears to muffle sound. There are in fact fewer cars on the roads but it seems to work also like a sound studio catching low noise and trapping it.

Add fog to the snow blanket and silence is almost a given.

Footsteps in the snow are witness to people actually still being around, yet they make no noise or less noise than usual.

Some patches look to be inaccessible even though the tracks tell a different story.
