A town less than 20km to the south from here and now a part of Heidelberg is called Handschuhsheim, literally translated “home of the glove”. This is its crest as displayed on the old castle Tiefburg in the middle of town:
Except there is non, really. Except for children’s stories. In the 14th century the lords of the town were known as the “Herren von Handschuhsheim” (they came from a different area and brought the name with them – where they got their name from is lost to history. One of the lords is buried with the monniker “He with the largest hand” but that was not where the name came from.
That would have a good story of how the name came about
