From a Distance

I normally look out in the other direction. Here I was in the Palatinate looking towards the east, towards the first row of hills of the Odenwald. The Bergstraße is recognisable even in 30 or 40 km distance because of the quarries.

Objectively, this is a scar in the hill and not necessarily a thing of beauty. But to me it always spelt home when I would see the orangey porphyry colour of the quarries after being away for awhile. This is the quarry between Schriesheim and Dossenheim.

This is the quarry of Weinheim which is close – too close for comfort – to the Wachenburg, one of the two castles overlooking the town.

In the great scheme of things 40 kilometres from Neustadt to Weinheim is not that far – but it’s quite a distance to bridge by foot or bike or view.
