Luigi Toscano’s mural in Mannheim is called “Gegen das Vergessen” (against forgetting, or maybe more poignant: Lest we forget). The two portraits are of two Holocaust survivors. The quote from the woman reads: “We need to remember the past but we must not live in it.” The man’s quote reads: “I’ve always lived in fear.”

This is so absolutely real. How can anything that even fancies itself a superior being be in this situation again? Very powerful piece.

I used to think that the Holocaust and all the history that surrounded it had indeed been consigned to history. Now I’m not so sure.
