German Autobahn

The various autobahn tracks around major cities are usually crowded and speed limits are applied, sometimes rigidly and sometimes flexible according to traffic flow.

Directional signs are blue and white. Much nicer to look for the brown and white signs that tell travellers about points of interest off the hgihway.

Sometimes there are cycle lanes on the side of the autobahn – usually only on bridges. It’s awful to cycle there but sometimes the only way to cross over an autobahn for many kilometres in either direction.

The large textured walls are designed to protect the residential areas beyond. Which is a great thing for the people living close to a highway. Driving on the highway, at least if I’m a passenger, it limits the view and I’m usually glad if I’m passe that section.
