Naturally Monochrome

When I decided on my next Monochrome Madness theme a while back I didn’t realise that I had picked the wrong time of year for it. Most of my “naturally monochrome” photos are from autumn or winter. But then again, it’s winter now for some “mad” contributors.

Nevertheless, I tried to find a variety of photos to illustrate my idea. There are naturally monochrome photos in colour – these are not meant to go in a post here. Margaret has that theme planned for later. So we are only talking black, white and grey.

Disclaimer: I did not use a desaturation tool, in some pictures you can still spot a hint of colour. Rather than editing that out by desaturating or darkening or less contras, I left it in order to stress the “natural” part. But in the end, it’s a balancing act.

I find I have a lot of winter snow and winter water pictures which are naturally in shades of grey.

The cormorant is my favourite naturally monochrome photo, shot on a grey day at our local lake. In fact, that’s the photo that gave me the idea for today’s theme. The water looks almost metallic and the bird is only a silhouette.

Talking of birds – on grey days looking up might be rewarding, grey clouds forming the perfect backdrop for a monochrome photo.

And here are some completely different motives:

I hope my photos have inspired you to have a look amongst your own photos. Or to go out and look for some black and white and grey. Surprise me!

  1. You managed to find lots of images Elke. I hadn;t thought about the time of year, but you are right. Yes, we are in winter now. Though not a lot fog and no snow. I think if you looked outside here you would think it was still autumn. The world is changing.

Thank you for being out host.

    1. Thanks for taking part, Brian. And for liking the cormorant. The car is a coach, the sign of a restaurant in Neustadt an der Weinstraße which used to be a place were stagecoaches stopped.

      1. The very first cars looked very much the same. I can only be sure when I really lighten the photo so that I can read the name on the sign: Kutcherhaus, aka coach house.

    1. Can’t reply to your last comment (no comments after first reply in these theme). But yes: of course, it counts. Even with that blue water, it’s a superb shot. The grebe set off by those poles with their broken reflection. I love it!
