An Asparagus Spider

This is a contraption that helps to harvest asparagus by lifting the protective foil so that the two harvesters sitting on the sides can reach the raised soil mounds.

      1. No, it’s the same every year – asparagus time ends traditionally on St John’s Day. It was a rule of old because it will be at least 100 days until the first frost and the plants need this time to recover. And even today, everybody seems to adhere to it.

    1. Harvesting asparagus (cutting off the “stem” – if that’s what is called – half a foot below ground) is a difficult job and long hours. Germans don’t do the work because it is not well paid and in fact, the farmers claim they prefer the seasonal workers from eastern European countries because they work better and don’t complain about the living conditions. The spider offers seating for the workers but I cannot judge whether that is really such an advantage.
