In shops, on the side of the road, in farmstalls. In our area asparagus are literally and figuratively part of the local culture.


And then, from one day to the other, the stalls are selling red currants, and strawberries, cherries and raspberries – but no more asparagus
and the asparagus fields are going to seed

Ah, Spargel! i remember visiting eastern Germany, probably in 2000 I think and there was asparagus, everywhere, Savoury and sweet dishes. Marvellous, I had never seen such a profusion of that vegetable before

Not where asparagus are concerned. The hub is around Schwetzing/ Heidelberg and generally in the Upper Rhine Valley. It’s been grown here for much, much longer.

Bittersweet. What’s not to like about summer fruits? And asparagus is special partly because its season is limited.
