Having grown to appreciate the hadeda ibis despite its claim to be the loudest bird in Africa when living on the Highveld in South Africa – a greyish bird with subdued iridiscent purple feathers – I was stunned to see its more flamboyant relative in the Worms Zoo.

Wow! Camouflage not an option here.

I read up a bit about this after your remark and I could only find “stands out against the lush green of its habitat”. So, I guess there are not many predators …

Find the right zoo! (I don’t think I’ll have the chance to see it in the wild.)

What an amazing bird. Can’t help but wonder what the evolutionary track was to get so flamboyant. It practically glows.

Maybe just being attractive to the hens. And no predators with good colour vision. But it makes one wonder.

Oh, the colour stems from its diet, similar to pink flamingoes.
