The German autobahn is notorious for having no speed restriction (which is not quite true, many parts of the autobahn are restricted but there are indeed stretches where no speed limit is supplied). It has been said that our “free riding for free citizens” (I almost mis-wrote: free traveling) is analog to the US American right to bear arms. A perennial topic in elections and something “the German” won’t have taken away from him (I use “him” on purpose).
However, the recommended speed is 120km/h and it is bandied about every four years come election time, and more and more people use this speed voluntarily.

This gung-ho attitude to speed seems so un-German. German motorways terrify me!

It’s not even the speed itself, I think. It’s “I don’t like to be told what to do at least in one area of my life!” As I said, the “unlimited” stretches are far and few between. And what I answered to Pepper.

I was a passenger on the autobahn once and it was not as scary as I had imagined. Probably because I was not doing the driving. 😁

It’s not scary. If the drivers are disciplined – and German drivers usually are – it’s like any other busy road.

That makes sense. 😊

I hitch-hiked through Germany in the beginning of the 80’s. It was easy to get a lift while standing at some Rastplatz. At least if the Rastplatz was big enough! Once we had to wait for almost 12 hours to get a lift, when our previous ride had left us at a very small intersection where nobody came. Those were long hours 😀

It’s known is Switzerland that in Germany there are no speed limits, common knowledge, I remember Mr. Swiss telling me. My daughter-in-law is German and she is a excellent driver, actually better than her husband. She naturally now lives in Switzerland with her family and she did get a ticket in Switzerland a few months ago for driving too fast. I suppose it is habit.

Swiss punishments for speeding are draconian compared to German laws.
