About 10 years ago when I last visited Schloss Alsbach – the ruin of a fortified castle in the Hessian Odenwald overlooking the Upper Rhine Valley – there was just a pillory for tourist amusement standing in the otherwise empty yard. When our running group chose it as midway of our weekly outing it showed the application of some love and care. For one, it has taken over as Halloween party venue from Burg Frankenstein close by and a skeleton in a cage dangling at the entrance is a year round witness to that fact. Inside there is still a pillory but also a chicken coop, and various huts with explanations about their functions in the middle ages. Somewhere along the line of photographing all that my camera battery went flat and I resorted to my mobile phone.
I felt lucky to have it as an alternative as on the outside of the castle walls I saw this structure. As it turns out these are three bee skeps made of straw as they were used during the middle ages.

Ah yes, we have similar bee skeps here at Fountains Abbey. A nice homely piece of history.

Before I only knew them from Wilhelm Busch, the progenitor of cartoon strip stories: https://www.google.com/search?num=10&sca_esv=06b99298468cf1b5&sxsrf=AE3TifMRLsUyNYaX-LGnKusV2N59U5Kt2A:1767517261970&udm=2&fbs=AIIjpHw2KGh6wpocn18KLjPMw8n5Yp8-1M0n6BD6JoVBP_K3fXXvA3S3XGyupmJLMg20um-SOUTyIGO-2L0vP6_J4YYTjW2aB8eSIJ35a4O65s7lB-U1N5Zbvu_vUU4OvdiS7jY5whprMMlCrrM1oT3zeFpJHNvRB22Xb6SLqdcQ-ngZre3afNpBQ1HkB_TKqSgxUANHqnuVxSJ4teKRkz-1cpG8jeGRKg&q=wilhelm+busch+bienenkorb&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiZ3KL0wvGRAxVNOfsDHWfvMNwQtKgLegQIFxAB&biw=1280&bih=799&dpr=1

It never occurred to me that beekeeping was a thing in the middle ages. Posts like this are why I enjoy blogging and reading blogs. Thanks for sharing.

Beekeeping has a fascinating history but in the early stages it ended up with the bees getting killed. Only after those boxes with removable panels this changed.
