My hometown is known as the two-castle-town because:

When a stranger to the town asks for the name of the castle, he or she will usually get the answer: Welli? Which is not the name of either of the castles but the question in the local vernacular when presented with a choice; in English: “Which one?”
In case anyone is interested, the old ruin on the right is called “Windeck”, the new castle (only a 100 years old) on the left is called “Wachenburg”.

……………………………………….
Two castles? Were the townspeople a bellicose lot?

No, that wasn’t it. The 1000-year-old ruin was built by Lorsch Abbey to better collect money from the townspeople. The 100 year old was built by student fraternities (a special branch from technical universities) to have a place to meet. Which they do, one weekend a year, where you can find students in various colourful uniforms and various states of drunkeness in the streets. Fathers usually lock up their daughters during this time.
