On Ash Wednesday Everything Ends

It’s Carnival Tueday today which in our area is the climax of the celebrations with many smaller carnival parades and street parties (unlike the big parades and revelleries in Mainz, Frankfurt and Cologne which are traditionally held on Sunday and Rose Monday). In many areas it’s called Fat Tuesday because it’s the last day that fatty foods should be eaten before it all ends on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the 40 days of fasting before Easter. A traditional food is the Fassekiechl, a kind fo jam doughnut (albeit customarily in a diamond form and not round).

My sister was more industrious than me and she had baked them when I came to her house (before going out together to join somewhat damp, somewhat lame street party in our market square). I couldn’t take a photo quick enough before they were all gone.
