Escape and all that jazz

Louis was an octogenarian, imprisoned by his children in a bargain clinic. Escape was going to be difficult. It was in the middle in a swamp. They had even taken away his belt. But Louis was resourceful. He took some spaghetti noodles and threaded them through the slings making a decent pair of dungarees. He’d pass as a janitor. The break-out was on!

Who was the ringleader?

Sheep follow their frontman or rather, front-sheep. If he or she takes a wrong turn, they all go wrong.

Two days ago in a small town in Frankonia a group of sheep got separated from their main group. And the ewe in front decided to go shopping. She was the catalyst that let about 50 sheep into a discount supermarket. Ironically, the chain of markets operates with the slogan: “First, go to Penny!”

The trouble with tallies

I use tallies to communicate numbers with my illiterate, non-German speaking students. Easy, I thought before the first time I tried it. I had to learn that tallying – you know, four vertical lines and one diagonal one signifies five – is not a universal concept. Even the ones that had some schooling do not know the concept. Quite a few have a hard time understanding and learning it.

PS re: the title – Yes, I just had a famous episode of Star Trek on my you tube feed.
