Ideal vs Reality

A happy cow, living in the country, not a care in the world.

Cows feeding in front of their stable.

Does it feel like prison?

NB: The cows photographed in this post are all well cared for, as far as I know. They are not locked up in small stalls, they can go outside. But they were graciously willing to pose for me.

Whoop, Whoop! Opa!

When I was three years old I contracted whooping cough. At the time, the treatment consisted of symptomatic relief, and caregivers were advised to let patients into fresh air, preferably sea or mountain climate.

We neither had close to us but for six weeks my grandpa put me on his shoulders and walked up these hills until we reached the castle on the left, quite a lot of steep paths through the thick forest in wonderful, healthy air.

He was indefatigable.

Compare the Windows

At the turn of the 18th to 19th century apartment blocks, i.e. houses for several families, were regularly being built. I don’t know if these qualify as terraced houses but they were built in rows. They looked uniform, i.e. they had the same numbers of windows, the windows had the same outline, the same paint job and the same decorations.

In the 100+ years since, the houses have changed owners and were renovated at different times, with quite varying restults.
