I feel extremely tired and lazy today (got inoculated this morning, one shot in every arm) so I’m just recycling a two-year-old post.

Our friend was 84 when this photo was taken. He is now 89. He still comes on the walking trails of our running group – usually setting the pace for us when the trail goes uphill.

Non-traditional Stickfighting
In Xhosa culture young men fight with sticks. It’s a skillful combat activity that can be dangerous.
We watched a few kids fighting with sticks in a park and I was impressed how disciplined they were thwacking and slapping their sticks together – they had tremendous fun and nobody got hurt.

The Top Hat is the Sign of Authority
At the various village festivals it’s tradition that a man (or a woman, these days) gives a speech regarding the village gossip of the past year. He (or she) traditonally wears an old fashioned frock coat or dark suit and a top hat. This year they had to get three years’ worth of gossip in on speech.
