I’m a Fan of Cosmos

These are not new photos, most of them are from last autumn. I looked at them for a collage for the Sunday colour collage challenge called Värikollaasit in which I participate. And I really thought these flowers needed to be showcased a bit more. For me, cosmos spell homesickness to the South African highveld where they abound in autumn. They are not native to South Africa but came there with contaminated horsefeed during the Boer War.

They look best either from far – just pink and dark and light pink shades over the Highveld, which I cannot have here in Germany – or from close up.

A Universe in Pink

Aino’s colours for today immediately put me in mind of cosmos – cosmos bipennatus – the flowers I know from the South African highveld. They grow in late summer so the green surrounding the pink and white flowers is partly subdued and veers towards beige.

Wanna Go on an Adventure?

Once a week we are out with friends on a run (or walk) following signs marked with chalk or flour. Before the run we have a chalk talk where the hare explains what signs she or he has used, an X usually means a wrong path, an arrow gives the direction, and so on.

Sometimes this weekly paper chase turns into a scavenger hunt. AQ stands for adventure quest and it means that somewhere near there is a stash of drinks (often schnapps or beer but always bottles of water for non-drinkers). The task of the hounds is to locate the hiding place of the goodies.

Besides the fun of looking for hidden goodies, this helps to keep all the runners together: while the frontrunners are looking for the AQ, the slower runners have a chance to catch up.
