Ndedema Gorge

Another hike in the Drakensberg was to the Ndedema Gorge. No need to carry a tent because camp is made under the same overhanging rocks where others have sought shelter in the past.

We didn’t leave anything behind unlike some of the people who have spent their nights in this location before us. The rock paintings are said to be several hundred or possibly thousand years old

One Rock? One?!

Debbie’s One Word Sunday prompt is rock. I couldn’t stop at one.

And don’t think these are just close-up of pebbles. To put it in perspective here are a few people.;

When the weather is good and the rocks are dry and non-slippery, the Felsenmeer near Reichenbach im Odenwald is teeming with families clambering up the 1,200 m sea of rocks.

Less athletic types can walk on a winding road between the different sections. Btw: This path also contains access points for ambulance and rescue vehicles. Needed regularly, I’m told.

But that doesn’t seem to deter the masses.

But in the past it was dragons.

Another one of our preferred places to go hiking in South Africa was the Drakensberg (dragon’s mountains). We hiked up what is known as the amphitheatre, a cliff face of over 5 kilometres in length and more than 1200 metres in height. Standing at the ledge is an amazing experience. While we were looking out over northern KwaZulu-Natal, a lammergeyer (bearded vulture) came up from behind us, flew overhead and then dove into the precipice.

Where else does one have the chance to see such a large bird of pride from above?

Wind and Clouds

People just needed to know from which direction the wind was blowing, then they started to look at temperature gages and mercury barometres. Nowadays we have these data interpreted for us and we look on our phone to see how the weather will be. I They used to display the current temperature on office buildings. Today I saw this big slab of weather predictions on the side of a pharmacy.

And to complement the picture, this is what the wheather looked today:

The first two big storms of the autumn season, Hendrik and Ignatz, have passed through. It was quite blustery but didn’t rain much in our area. Today, the winds were still strong and clouds chased across the sky but breaking up and letting sunshine through on occasion.
