We like to sing!

The seal of approval by the German choir association awarded to nursery schools which excel in music education. It reads: We like to sing!

A verse of a well-known and well-liked children’s song, sung by children waiting for St Nicolas:

  • Let us all be cheery and bright
  • And look forward to Nicolas’ night.
  • Merrily, merrily, ding ding dong!
  • It’s Nicolas evening before too before long.

The verse is part of a mural on the side of the Hornbacher Steinhäusel in a village in the Odenwald. The rest of the description reads:

“- and those who don’t know any better and don’t believe it should come with us to the Krähberg, to the proper Steinhäusel, to experience St Nicolas’ evening with the village youths, which is happening every year.”

This is a monument to honour the victims of violence, war, and persecution by Hubertus von der Goltz. That their precarious position is threatened can be seen by the spikes on either side (I have to go back and get a better photo).

Being on tenterhooks

As tenterhooks are difficult to come by these days and the figurative meaning is difficult to photograph I decided to take the German equivalent of the idiom: auf glühenden Kohlen sitzen = to sit on glowing embers.

Both is painful, I guess.
