Early favourite

135 Pitschi (640x480)

This was one of my most beloved picture books when I was little.  It disappeared with nieces and nephews and grandchildren but I was lucky to be able to find another copy.  It is the story of Pitschi, a little kitten who doesn’t feel that it fits in with the others.  So it goes off and tries to find a place for itself.

It tries to be a rooster, and a goat, and finally almost drowns when it goes swimming with the ducks.  It is rescued and the bunnies lick it try and take it home.  But at night it is very frightened, so when it is found in the morning it is very ill.  The old woman who lives on the farm takes the sick kitten and swaddles it like a baby until it is better again.  Then the farm dog takes Pitschi around in a pram because it is still too weak.   It ends with a big party to make the little cat smile again and Pitschi finally feels that it belongs and how beloved it is by everyone.

X marks the spot

Those skis might not be much good on a piste anymore but they make great decorations.

x x 1 (640x480)

Another wooden X – it is the top of a birdhouse made of the thick part of palm fronds, currently used as the centre piece of a small nativity scene.

Gallows

X marks the spot – in this case, the very spot were covenanters were hanged for their protestant faith in Edinburgh’s grassmarket area in the 17th century.  The memorial features a red version of the St Andrew’s cross.

Cee’s alphabet quest has reached the letter X.  Other photographers interpretations of X (in word or picture) can be found here:

A famous sleeper … or is it?

Irony in Sunderland

Sunderland City Council commissioned the artist Irony via “Fitzrovia Noir” to create a mural in a shelter on Roker beach.  This spot faces the beaches where Lewis Carroll was inspired, so it is said, and the piece carries the name “Alice in Sunderland”.  The shelter is dark and made darker by the black background, thus the UV ‘light responsive’ stand out particularly well.

To pet or not to pet …

Another batch of oddballs for Cee’s Odd Ball Challenge.  The pink bulldog stood in front of an interior decorator’s room, the undefinable breed is part of an art installation in Seeheim-Jugenheim, Hesse, Germany.

I’ve always found the rows of vines in a vineyard with a vanishing point in the distance make good photos.  We went on a wine walk yesterday – basically a stroll through the vineyards of one village with tents put up at intervals where one can sample the local wine and different kinds of food.  The weather wasn’t great but it least it didn’t rain and the cold was the right incentive to try out the more than 20 red wines on offer (not to mention the whites and rosés).  Not that the thousands of people needed much of an incentive!
