Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Numbers: Anything with Numbers on It

A number of years ago (a bigger number than I care to remember) I decided to try my hand on some creative stitchery. I’ve never done anything similar before or after but I still have a deep feeling of satisfaction whenever I look at this picture, made up of thread, seeds, pearls, mother-of-pearl pieces, and buttons.

St Florian is the patron saint of firefighters. This statue of him was erected in 1991 in front of the old building of the Munich fire brigade.

“O heiliger Sankt Florian, verschon’ mein Haus, zünd’ and’re an“, this not-really-serious prayer in German is a wellknown saying: “O Holy St Florian, please spare my house, set fire to another one”.

We’ve been living with this edge since 1894 in our hometown, and it has been growing. It is now threatening to encroach on the castle which is one of the landmarks of the area. In a peculiar twist, the site of this quarry belongs to a town which lies 10km to the south – whereas we are worried about an enlargement of the quarry, the other town is keen on the revenue generated by it. Luckily, the conflict was resolved last year, and works will be stopped soon. They are talking about recultivation but the stone wall is about 230 metres from the bottom to the edge of the forest.
For a sunflower change is slow yet inevitable: a bud, slowly unfolding, the petals unfurling, the radiant flower in full bloom, attracting bees and other insects, then the drooping head with the wilting and finally withering petals.
I might add a shot with the seeds later during the year.
