Wedding guests
My black and white photos this week are all of children’s faces, nothing textured about them. They were all taken at a wedding, the day was very hot and it was getting late in the afternoon. I find that the monochrome version of these shots focus the viewer on the faces of the children and their expressions.
This little girl has the most amazing eyes, and I like the way they shine even in the b&w version of the picture.

A castle, a river and mountains
Cee’s Compose Yourself – the challenge is: “landscapes”.
Two photos from Weinheim an der Bergstraße in Germany:
I prefer the second shot. In the first one, the area looks cramped as if it was in a narrow valley when in fact the Wachenburg looks over the wide Rhine plain. The clouds not only add depth to the sky but the shadows they cast also add texture to the forest.
Another German river valley, this time the Moselle. Vinyards rise on both sides of the river. The barge and the houses, especially the mansion on the left, serve as scale and enhance the steepness of the vinyards.
Same river, a number of kilometers downstream and at a different time of year:
The autumn mists casting a haze over the valley in the back, contrasting with the vivid colours of the yellowing leaves.
This is the Kleinwalsertal – a small anomaly as it is part of Austria but can only be reached from Germany because of the high mountain ridge towards the Austrian side.
This is half way up, looking straight out to the mountains of Germany:
Above Grindelwald in Switzerland, the bare rocks attest the higher altitude in this part of the Alps. The photographer in the foreground is deceiving the viewer. The shadow on his side of the mountain almost lets him look like a giant.
My final photo for this challenge – also from Switzerland with a paraglider high up in the air. Again this perspective is teasing the viewer because as high as the paraglider is – he is well below the peaks in the background to the right.
The colour wheel goes round and round, round and round, …
My last entry for Cee’s Compose Yourself – with this I’ve caught up with the current topic. This is about “Complimentary colours”, i.e. colours that are next to each other or at least close on a colour wheel.
The photos appear as the colours move clockwise through the colour wheel. The photos are harmonious in itself but not necessarily next to each other so the overall effect is less calming than the individual photos would be but I couldn’t decide where to start the circle.

A two-faced sprite

The Forest spirits of Oberotterbach
We were in the south western corner of Germany this weekend, almost in France. On our hike we came across these most unusual sculptures – not made out of cut wood but out of tree stumps. Because of this these “spirits of the forest” are naturally camouflaged. I found it a pity that the artist thought he had to make his work more visible by adding colour, I like the idea of them blending in the forest even at the cost of maybe missing some of them.
I like the fact that the wood is still changing, splitting and finally rotting.
But if you are alone in these woods – beware of crocodile!

I came across this knitted wonder earlier today (in front of a yarn shop). Probably not Tour-de-France material but definitely an eye catcher. I seem to have an affinity with yarn shops and knitted fashion.

Cold, warm, warmer – find the right temperature!
I’ve reached the colour section of Cee’s essays and this means two more to go and I will be up-to-date with the current week.
Warm and cold colours – as experienced in a single shot but the mood changes according to the post editing. These sandstone crosses are pretty stark – they stand without any adornment.
I 0ften prefer sandstone in warmer tones because the stone itself – with it’s different rosy hues establishes a warm feeling – but in this shot it mellows them too much and they lose their strength.
This witch tower is part of the medieval town wall of Ladenburg. The clouds were dramatic and so was the light threatening a thunderstorm.
Going for warmer colours, the tower itself seems to glow and although the clouds have lost their darkness they seem to be sulphuric. The emphasis was changed through the colour temperature, i.e. in the photo above it is more on the impending storm and in the one below on the tower.
I liked Cee’s idea of a colour collage and here is the “warm collage” – a collection of autumnal browns, greens, and yellows with a bit of red thrown in.
