The German highways, the “Autobahnen”, are famous for their stretches with no speed limit. Which is a bit of a myth because even though there are no set limits the rule is always to drive weather and traffic appropriate. And even the limitless stretches are … Continue reading Wir fahrn fahrn fahrn auf der Autobahn
To some it’s madness, and to others it’s exhilarating fun. I’m sitting on the fence. I might like to try it. I think. Maybe. Okay, I’m off the fence. IT IS MADNESS! Weekly Prompt Weekend Challenge: Madness
Germany is known for “quiet time”, i.e. loud intentional and avoidable noises are not allowed at certain times. The exact times are determined by the local authorities but in general they are during the early afternoon every day and all of Sunday. Sunday is considered a Ruhetag, a day of rest, Ruhe implying rest and quiet.
As a consequence, lawn should not be mowed on a Sunday. This particular lawn (our lawn) will not be mowed anytime soon, though. My son wanted a particular favour from dad, offered to mow the lawn, and was forbidden to do it – because my husband likes the little yellow flowers. Hence: Silent Sunday and silent every day.
Ironically the flowers (weed?) are called “common piglet herb (gemeines Ferkelkraut) in German. In English it’s called common or hairy cat’s ear. We like the English name better!
I’m getting knots in my fingers to sort out the last wordpress pages.
There are two things hat I need help with:
I’ve started a chat with the wordpress “happiness engineers”. No happiness. They haven’t answered. But the chat left a speech bubble at the bottom right corner, blocking various functions (like “create gallery” etc.). I’ve asked them to remove it but – you guessed it – no answer there either. Has anybody an idea how to remove this highly annoying and hindering button?
When I go the dashboard there are 2 viewing possibilities: default and classic view. I always had “default view” and I want it permanently. Now, I always have to chose it specifically but “classic” is the ACTUAL default. Annoying. Particularly annoying in the media library where I can’t change to “default view” anymore (which may be by design but if it’s not I like to change it).
The small church on the left side, a chapel actually, was built on the initiative of its donor, Hildegund von Weinheim in the 14th century. It has quite a colourful history and was maintained by various donors and charity trusts. Although a Roman Catholic chapel it opened it doors to the Protestant congregation in 1973, the year when I had confirmation classes. But it was not used for Catholic services for many years and in 2012 the building was desegregated and sold. Since then it is an event location and can be booked for wedding receptions, art exhibitions, company and family events. I wonder what the original donor would think about that?
After weeks of rain or at least cloudy skies we are having gorgeous skies at the moment. I was sitting in the courtyard of the local castle (now our townhall) and looking up was a pure delight – but not unhindered.
