A Stalwart Hasher

Yes, I am. Looking at all the hashing paraphernalia I’ve got with my name on, there is no other conclusion:

But our big weekend is looming. And the weather looks very wet and windy. So, although I will see myself like this:

I will probably look more like this (hazzled about sorting things for 300 runners and revellers):

Nevertheless, I am still hoping for this (and by Monday I will probably feel like this):

Beware of Trees

Roads in the North of Germany are known for the trees lining either side. As big as they are they seem to need a traffic sign so that drivers are aware of them.

The First Car

This is the Benz-Haus, the house where Carl Benz lived in Ladenburg once his company had become successful. He built was is considered the first workable automobile in 1886.

From this came the Mercedes Benz car factory which is known worldwide by the three pointed star.

This one adorns a model from the 1930ies standing in the Technik Museum Speyer, about 30 km from Carl Benz’ villa.

The Devil of a Movie

Not so much a movie (although two movies exist with that title) but a character. Mephiso is of course, the devil in Faust I + II, the drama written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, generally considered the German play per se. I read it first at school (and loved it); I listened to the most famous production with Gustav Gründgens as Mephisto on lp so often that I know long stretches by heart; I used parts for auditioning pieces; I designed a stage for it – in other words, Faust and Mephisto have been with me for a long time.

There is a movie called Méphisto from 1931 with Jean Gabin, and Mephisto with Klaus Maria Brandauer, which won the 1982 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

The above cinema in Ulm was named after the character.
