Recycle!

Plastic bottles carry a 25 cent deposit in Germany hence there are many people rummaging through refuse bins to fish them out. With hard times this has become a way to supplement income for many. To make it less dirty and possibly demeaning a new type of rubbish bin has appeared in some towns: instead of throwing the bottle in the bin, one can stack it in one of the holders on the side.

Wine bottles do not carry a deposit and are collected in glass recycle containers instead. Or are hidden in a hosta plan.

Lemon Exotic

Our area is known to have the mildest climate in Germany (together with the island Mainau in Lake Constance). In the local park, adjacent to the castle, there are a couple of lemon trees. Not so unusual, there are more citrus trees in Germany. But these are the only ones that I know being outside all year long and the fruits actually turn yellow.

Shedding Light on Old Tales

In the old part of Heppenheim there are more than 70 lanterns decorated with cut-outs illustrating tales and legends of the region. The artworks were created by Albert Völkl.

The latern in the photo features a story about a recluse who likely frightened the people living in the area.

The “Mordche” (a name alluring to ‘small murderer’) is said to have lived in a particularly dense part of the Bombach forest. The story goes that he was a small man who had killed his brother during a quarrel and after avoiding justice for a long time finally found a hiding place in the Bombach valley.

Nostalgia

There is this strip of flowers next to a field and I make a point of driving there at least once every September. Normally cosmos are garden flowers in Germany, a couple of clumps at most. This strip – possibly 200 metres long, 2 metres wide at most – is a place where they are allowed to grow wild and it reminds me so much of the highveld in South Africa where in autumn white and pink cosmos fields stretch into the distance.
