The weeks before Christmas there is lots of baking going on. Even the heavenly bakery is firing up the ovens preparing for the festive season.

I hope the Finnish in the title is correct. A small explanation concerning this collage might be due. Our running group has a few Finnish runners and some others have lived in Finland, so each year around 6 December we usually had a special Finnish run. And since it is also the time of Christmas markets we found the same one each year, had some Glühwein or even Swedish glogg and then someone brought out a bottle of Salmiakki and the fun really started. The Salmiakki was traditionally bought at the Finnkiosk in Frankfurt. We ended up singing bawdy songs and we all sang one really rude one (I’m told) to the melody of “Oh, Christmas tree” in Finnish.
This year – well, not so much. And although I can go without Salmiakki for a year, I miss my friends.

Tonight children all over Germany will put their boots in front of the door so that St Nicholas can fill them with small gifts. I wonder if he will find this one?

Today is St Nicholas’ Day – children will put their boots in front of the door and listen for some heavy steps pounding outside and then slowly peek around the door to see if he left chocolates, nuts, and tangerines.
