An unwelcome chill

So there I was taking a break after a long day’s driving. The sun had just set and there was an uneasy sultriness in the air. It felt almost claustrophic, with several hillocks closing in on me. Then I looked up and saw something coming over the rise:

The king is in

The title is a private joke in our family. In Jeddah, where we used to live for a short while, is King Fahd’s fountain – the tallest fountain in the world, spraying salt water around 300 metres into the air. It could be seen from most places in Jeddah but it wasn’t always switched on. The joke was – at least amongst expats – that it was on whenever the king was in his Jeddah residence. Hence, whenever we see a fountain, we proclaim: The king is in!

More than just a hole in the ground

This toilet seat is of Roman origin, in a villa rustica excavated near the village of Hummetroth in the Odenwald. Like other Roman villas of the same time this one sported many amenities like a bath house and underfloor heating which must have been the height of luxury in the 2nd century surrounded by barbarians on all side.

Be like the ant in summer days

Found on the walls of the Red Mosque in the palace gardens of the Schwetzinger Schloss. Since summer is short or in Shakespeares’ words:

Summer’s lease hath all too short a date.”

be like the busy ant, go milk those aphids, gather the honeydew, and store it for winter. Coz’ winter is coming.

Alternatively, you can also stop and smell the roses.

This bud’s for you!

I know it is very northern hemisphere centric to always think of our seasons as the dominant ones but when I saw the prompt for the day I immediately thought that I would have to look amongst my spring collection rather than take a new photo. But then I decided to go outside and saw that the the dwarf roses had decided to reward me for my efforts last month with a lot of late buds. It pays to care!
