A service of love and charity

“The science of healing is but a daily service of love and charity to foster the wellbeing of sufferers!”

This quote and many others by Johann Christian Senckenberg are painted on the walls of the Bürgerhospital in Frankfurt am Main. It was the first hospital open to the townspeople there (an earlier hospital was only open to travellers and pilgrims), founded and built from 1760 onwards by the Senckenberg foundation. He was a physician and natural scientist. After all his wives (he had three) had died as well as his children he turned all his money over to a foundation which had the aim to help the sick and injured of his hometown. He planned the hospital and died after a fall on the building site in 1772. If interested, here you can learn more about the man.

Treasure of the the Silver Lake

The title is the title of novel by Karl May (Der Schatz im Silbersee) which generations of Germans have read in their youth. It was the first one of a series centering around two main characters, the German born traveller Old Shatterhand and the “noble savage” Winnetou, an Apache chief. When the story was turned into a movie in the early 1960s it was filmed in Yugoslavia, in the area around the Plitvice Lakes. A holiday there is for many Germans a holiday with their childhood fantasies.

The mind boggles

… and the cat just lies there …

… anywhere, really …

But the cat will also tell me lies. Like: “We are just friends, having a friendly get-together.”

And yet, then the dragonfly just lies there.

Don’t let it grow under your feet

Although I am allergic to grass pollen, I like getting close to grass – even if in bloom.

Much like insects.

It serves not only as a backdrop.

A miniature version of lens balls.

Occasionally, grass harbours surprises.

Animals like to shelter in grass, too.

Not just small animals.

It can even serve as a play thing.

All too soon it changes colour, the forecast of autumn storms.

Connect with someone today!

Although the words on this mural read: “Family is everything” I think “family” can be defined in much broader terms than merely blood relations.

Connection can happen through physical touch – but it doesn’t need to. The internet is much maligned these days because the role it plays in agitation and false information but we shouldn’t forget how it can bring people together. Bushboy who came up with today’s prompt is in Australia. I am in Germany. Yet we share a connection via our posts and photos.

Here is the whole mural:
