Year after year

Sommertagszug_Elke_Woll_1

Wrong season – but it’s a craft that is practiced every year in our region.  There is a parade in many towns on the mid-lent Sunday to welcome spring and burn an effigy of winter.  The children carry self-made “Sommertagsstecken”, sticks decorated with loops of colourful paper, a sweet “Bretzel” and a blown egg topped off with a twig of evergreen boxwood.  The sticks are made in schools by the children themselves or by the parents at meetings in the days prior to the parade.

Damn, those Dirty Dots look kind of Dada!

German car number plates have the area abbreviation and two more letters. In some areas one can have more fun with words than in others (try to make something pronounceable with MTK or WHV).  Darmstadt (DA) is a goldmine, but Dieburg (DI) and Dortmund (DO) can also yield some interesting finds.  I’ve only recently started to take pics of fun number plates, I’m sure my collection will grow in time.

Application denied

I saw this a couple of years ago in Neustadt/Dosse in Brandenburg, Germany.  I couldn’t find a local who could (or would) explain to me what the creator of the piece was protesting against.  Apparently, he or she or some organisation wrote applications yearly from 2000 onwards, which were filed and denied, and in 2004 the matter was finally closed, whether by death of the process itself or a person involved I don’t know.
