Springtime Seminar

It was in 2019 when I went to the last in person seminar. After teaching German to functionally illiterate learners for over three years I had to take a course on how to teach functionally illiterate learners German. The seminar was in Böblingen, south of Stuttgart, over three consecutive weekends.

It was spring and the weather was beautiful on the first Saturday.

In the centre of Böblingen is a lake and I took the lunchbreak to go for a walk.

I don’t remember much about the seminar but that spring day is still present in my mind.

Think Sphinx, Think Egypt – Not!

When one thinks of sphinxes one normally thinks of Egypt. But the mythical creatures have settled in different parts of Europe. They often appear in twos.

This magnificent sphinx looks down from the top of the National Gallery in Edinburgh.

This more modern interpretation of a sphinx sits on Victoria Square in Birmingham.

Even more modern is this standing sphinx seen near the lake in Böblingen. Unfortunately, a victim of a bad paint job.

Sphinxes seem to be drawn to museums. This Art Nouveau specimen crowns the cupola of the Wiesbaden museum together with two non-sphinx companions.

And finally, this rather buxom beauty and its twin sit – of all places – in front of a tomb in a cemetery in Heidelberg.

Field trip

This year isn’t really the year for field trips but last year I had three weekends in the town of Böblingen, just south of Stuttgart, for a training program. I got up early (against my nature) and took photos around the hotel and the two town lakes.

The school and hotel was in the old part of town, amongst the pubs and restaurants and clubs.

Böblingen has an upper and lower lake which got a make-over for the national botanical show in 1996.

The walks around the lakes are dotted with sculpture pieces – which kind of spilled over in town.

It was early spring, so not too many flowers yet – but the people of the town were obviously expecting a rich harvest.
