Smoking Is no Longer in Fashion

The last tobacco grower in our area gave up in 2010. Many of the barns in which the tobacco leaves were dried can still be seen. Because they have open wooden walls they cannot be used for anything else as they stand. So while they are not really abandoned, they are empty and vacated.

Often the structures below the drying areas are still in use, for storage and the like.

Not a tobacco barn but still a barn that is no longer in use. It has started to look abandoned even though it is attached to a kind of grange.

Water My Blood

How can you not think of Hemingway?

The Old Man and the Sea
Earth my body.
Air my breath.
Fire my will.
Water my blood.

Small droplets

collecting in puddles and bowls

flowing into streams

and rivers

into larger rivers

and finally finding their way into the sea

reaching from shore to shore.

The Bridges of the Lower Neckar

The bridge from Ladenburg to Neckarhausen, looking towards Mannheim.
The same bridge looking in the opposite direction, towards Heidelberg.
Closer to the confluence with the Rhein this bridge is this railway bridge spanning two arms of the Neckar and the island in between.
Lock on the River Neckar at Heidelberg with a pedestrian bridge.

Less than 300 metres downstream is the Old Bridge crossing the Neckar and leading to the white twin towers of the Heidelberg town gate.

Is It a Castle or a Manor House?

Last week I drove a mere 4 km from home and found out that there is a castle in the second village down the road. I never knew. It’s called Schloss Wiser and is still owned by the family who had it built in 1710. It’s not open to the public cause the family lives there on occasion but when I approached the gates opened. I didn’t go inside the court yard though but I took a picture of the ungated view.

So if the owner and resident is an Earl – what do you call the building then? A palace? A castle? A stately home? Does it matter? Not really, except to a translator who wants to get it right.

The Odd Armadillo

That was the first picture I saw of this … this … whatsit. What is it? A vomiting lizzard? Or did I read the fountain in the wrong direction and this was a drinking green pig with a large tail? What about the wings? A dragon whelp? I don’t know that I was thinking except that – “This is really odd!!”

As we went more often to Frankfurt we kept seeing more pictures of the creature.

And not just pictures, sculptures as well.

And after a while we started to understand. This was the Frankfurt Grüngürteltier or literally, the Green Belt Creature. The name is pun – green belt is literally Grüngürtel but a Gürteltier is the name of an armadillo in German. It is used as a signpost for the 68km long walking path encircling the city.

This is for another one of Cee’s guest challenges.
