Faded

That’s me (second row, serious expression) at my confirmation. I was a bit of a rebel which you can’t see in the photo because I defied the “black and white only” as I wore a dark blue skirt and blouson. The mini skirt was de rigeur (the girls wearing pant suits only did so because their mothers wouldn’t allow knees showing). Some of us joined the church youth group in the year to come and we were all very keen because of a charismatic young minister. We met every Friday, and I’ve just been reminded this week that I learned how to drink beer out of a boot shaped glass because we often used to go to pub afterwards. Three of the group became ministers themselves in later years and I considered this career for awhile. Then I grew up.

Seven People

When I passed this somehow intriguing, somehow disconcerting church – the brick stripes really create an unsettling effect – I counted seven, snapped it for September, and hurried by. At home I realised it is eight, not seven, figures – the baby was hard to see before a bit of enhancing the photo. Which is weird considering that Christians have named their faith after this baby. But it’s still seven adults.

So I thought I pair it with a square seven shot that I had been holding back because as much as I love winter (the real one, with snow and ice) I am not yet ready for it.

Seven living breathing beings in this one. Babies and dogs were counted.

At Any Time of the Year

Wiesbaden, like Rome, is built on seven hills. The most prominent one is the “Neroberg”. About halfway up on this hill is the Russian-orthodox church – a reminder of the time when Russians were very prominent in the city. The golden tops of its five towers look spectacular no matter what the weather is.

They look spectacular in autumn when one comes upon them unsuspectedly from below after walking through a sombre autumn forest.

It looks spectacular in winter when one approaches from above and the sun hits the gold with full force.

It looks spectacular in summer when only the golden tops look over the green canopy of the surrounding forest.
