The Devil Didn’t Do It! (this time)

The good people of Mayen tricked the devil into helping them to build their church and he was so enraged about it that he tried to tear off the spire. He twisted it this way and that but it didn’t come off. So he left enraged and the spire stayed up – albeit all twisted and asked. That’s the legend and the spire became the emblem of Mayen. Allied bombers destroyed the church in 1945 but it was rebuilt – with the twisted spire.

Cee gave me the idea for this entry into her Fun Foto Challenge when she asked for outdoor ways to move up and down: outdoor stairs, ladders, hot air balloons.

I took these photos a few years ago when hiking in the Eifel, a part of Germany to the west of Frankfurt.  The balloon came up and then descended in the valley in front of us only to fire up and get another lift.

More photos of outdoor ways to move up and down can be found here.
