Carthusian Pink

I like this little flower which can often be seen in the fields at the moment. I like it more now that I know the different names it has, in German but also in English: clusterhead or clusterhead pink, dianthus carthusianorum (okay, that’s really Latin), and German pink.

There is this strip of flowers next to a field and I make a point of driving there at least once every September. Normally cosmos are garden flowers in Germany, a couple of clumps at most. This strip – possibly 200 metres long, 2 metres wide at most – is a place where they are allowed to grow wild and it reminds me so much of the highveld in South Africa where in autumn white and pink cosmos fields stretch into the distance.
